One of the earliest and most influential artists in the history of the comic medium, Winsor McCay (1871-1934) is a seminal figure in the comic art world. Federico Fellini called him a "powerful influence", Robert Crumb called him a "genius" and he has been cited as an influence by a wide range of artists from Carl Barks (Scrooge McDuck) and Art Spiegelman (Maus) to Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are) and Rick Veitch (Swamp Thing).
Little Nemo in Slumberland depicted the title character having fantastic dreams interrupted as he woke up in the final panel. It is widely regarded as McCay’s masterpiece for its experiments with the comics form, its use of color, the varying size and shape of its panels, panoramic perspectives, architectural detail, and sheer imagination. McCay's work has influenced virtually every other comic creator in the medium.
