One of the earliest and most influential artists in the history of the comic medium, Winsor McCay (1871-1934) is a seminal figure in the comic art world. Federico Fellini called him a "powerful influence", Robert Crumb called him a "genius" and he has been cited as an influence by a wide range of artists from Carl Barks (Scrooge McDuck) and Art Spiegelman (Maus) to Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are) and Rick Veitch (Swamp Thing).
McCay created "Dream of the Rarebit Fiend" for an adult audience and it contains bizarre ideas that were new to the comic medium. The strip has no recurring characters, but rather a recurring theme: a character has a nightmare or other bizarre dream , usually after eating Welsh rarebit (a cheese-on-toast dish). The dreams sometimes revealed the darker sides of the dreamers’ psyches such as their fears, or outlandish fantasies. "Dream of the Rarebit Fiend" was frequently a clever examination of the subconscious in bizarre and surreal terms.
